Aramid cloth, aka Kevlar fabric, is a strong and durable synthetic fabric made from aramid fibers. It has a high strength-to-weight ratio, making it a popular choice for applications where strength is required without adding  weight. Commonly used in marine, aerospace and automotive applications due to abrasion, cut, impact & heat resistance, Aramids display excellent dimensional stability w/ a slightly negative coefficient of thermal expansion (-2.4 X 10-6/ºC). Resistant to chemicals (apart from a few strong acids & alkalis), Aramids are notably stable over a wide range of temperatures for prolonged periods. Essentially zero embrittlement or strength loss is shown at temperatures as low as -320ºF (-196ºC). Aramids do not melt or support combustion but will start to carbonize at approximately 800ºF (427ºC).

The main advantages of aramid fibers are:

  • Light weight
  • High impact damage tolerance
  • High tensile strength
  • Moderately high tensile modulus (midway between E-glass & HS carbon)
  • Excellent vibration damping
  • Low (negative) longitudinal thermal expansion

The main disadvantages of aramid are:

  • Very low compressive strength
  • Susceptibility to UV radiation
  • Difficult to machine
  • High moisture absorption
  • Very high transverse thermal expansion
